随着社会不断的进步，我国民办养老院发展也越来越成熟，到现在已起到了积极的、重要的作用，具体主要体现在以下几个方面：
    1、调动了多方面的社会资源都来积极的参与和兴办养老事业，有力地弥补了国有资源的严重不足；
    2、迅速地增加了为老服务的供给，缓解了日趋尖锐的养老事业的供求矛盾；
    3、民办养老院数量的不断增长和质量的提高，有利于养老服务市场公平竞争机制和规范化的市场运作机制的形成，对老年人福利事业的发展是一种促进；
    4、民办养老院对国办养老院形成了强大的外部压力，有利于促进革除国家包办福利的弊端，为国家财政拨付机制的根本性转变昭示了改革和发展的方向。
    5、民办养老院的发展，有利于社会慈善意识和道德水准的提升，促进社会主义精神文明建设的深入开展。
